The Complete Beginner's Guide to Shisha: Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Session

If you've never smoked shisha before, welcome. You're about to discover one of the oldest social rituals in the world — refined over centuries and, in the right venue with the right equipment, one of the most pleasant ways to spend an evening.

This guide covers everything you need to know before your first session: how shisha works, what to order, what to expect, how to avoid common mistakes, and how to make sure you have a genuinely great experience.

What Is Shisha?

Shisha (also called hookah, nargileh, or argile) is a water pipe used to smoke flavored tobacco. Heat from coals vaporizes the tobacco, the smoke passes through water in the base (which cools and filters it), and you inhale through a hose.

The experience is fundamentally different from cigarettes. The tobacco is not burned — it's heated to a temperature that vaporizes the glycerin and flavoring compounds without combusting the leaf. The result is flavored, cooled smoke that is far less harsh on the throat than any form of cigarette smoking.

The Anatomy of a Shisha

  • Bowl — the clay or ceramic cup at the top that holds the tobacco
  • Foil or heat management device — sits on top of the bowl, controls heat delivery
  • Coal — the heat source that sits on the foil and heats the tobacco
  • Shaft — the central pipe that smoke travels through, ideally stainless steel
  • Base (vase) — the glass water reservoir that cools the smoke
  • Hose — the pipe you draw from
  • Mouthpiece — what goes in your mouth

What to Order for Your First Session

Choose Blonde Tobacco

For your first session, always choose blonde tobacco. It's the lightest in nicotine, the smoothest to inhale, and the most forgiving if heat management isn't perfect. Red and Black tobacco are for experienced smokers — they have significantly higher nicotine content and can make a first-timer feel dizzy or unwell.

Choose a Fruity or Mint Flavor

Classic beginner flavors: Double Apple Mint, Watermelon, Peach Mint, Lemon Mint, or Blueberry. These are light, fresh, and universally enjoyable. Avoid complex or unusual combinations for your first session — you want something simple and pleasant while you get a feel for the experience.

If you're at Loco's: tell our staff it's your first time. We'll set the bowl and coals correctly for a beginner session — lighter heat, smooth draw, everything calibrated so you have the best possible introduction.

How to Smoke Shisha

The Draw

Draw slowly and gently — this is not cigarette smoking. A long, slow, steady pull for 3–5 seconds is ideal. Fast or forceful draws pull too much heat through the tobacco and make the smoke harsh. Slow and easy produces the smoothest, most flavorful experience.

Breathe It In? Or Not?

For your first session, draw the smoke into your mouth and hold it briefly before exhaling — no need to inhale deeply into your lungs. As you get more comfortable, you'll find your own preference. Most experienced shisha smokers do a light chest inhale rather than a deep lung inhale.

The Pace

Take a draw every 30–60 seconds. Constant drawing overheats the tobacco and produces harsh smoke. A steady, relaxed pace produces a consistent experience and keeps the bowl temperature in the ideal range.

What to Expect During Your Session

The First Few Draws

The first 2–3 draws on a fresh bowl are often the most flavorful — maximum glycerin vapor, full flavor compounds, everything fresh. Enjoy these.

Nicotine Sensation

Even Blonde tobacco contains nicotine. If this is your first time, you may feel a light buzz — a mild head sensation, slightly elevated heart rate, or a calm, relaxed feeling. This is normal. It passes within 10–20 minutes. If you feel dizzy, put the hose down, drink some water, and take a break.

Duration

A proper shisha session on natural coals runs 60–90 minutes. Take your time. This is meant to be a social experience, not something you rush. The best sessions are the long ones.

Common Beginner Mistakes

  1. Choosing Black tobacco on your first session — too high in nicotine
  2. Pulling too hard and too fast — overheats the bowl, produces harsh smoke
  3. Not drinking water — stay hydrated throughout your session
  4. Sitting in a poorly ventilated space — always ensure good airflow
  5. Skipping the mouthpiece tip — always use a personal mouthpiece tip for hygiene

After Your Session

A session on quality equipment with natural coals should leave you feeling relaxed, not ill. If you feel any headache or nausea afterward, it's almost always due to one of three things: nicotine overconsumption (you drew too frequently), quick-light coal chemical exposure, or dehydration.

Drink water throughout your session, pace yourself, and choose your venue carefully. The equipment matters as much as the tobacco.
